I have lived in Des Moines, Iowa my entire life.
And quite frankly, I'm ready to move outta here. After high
school, I just wasn't ready to jump right into college. I tried
it a couple times, but I just wasn't ready for all of that.
After working a few years, going from job to job, I realized
without an education, I'm not going to find anything out there
that makes me truly happy. Then a few years ago, I realized I
was ready for college. So after the headache of getting back
into school, I finally did so in the summer of 2003. It was
probably the best thing I've done so far in my life. I was ready
for school and ready to make a future for myself. I knew that
this was it, I was in for the long haul, and I must succeed in
making my dreams come true.
A major change in plans for my future. I
originally wanted to go to Iowa State to get into their computer
security program, then try to get a job with the FBI. Well,
after really, REALLY thinking about things, I realized a few
very important things. In order for me to get into the computer
security 2 year program, I would first have to transfer into one
of a handful of programs, complete it, and then try to get into
their computer security program. The programs that I would have
to transfer into are varied; the ones that have to do most with
computers are 2, and they are Computer Engineering and Computer
Science. In Computer Engineering, you learn basically how to
make computer parts, something I have no interest in nor do I
want to learn about. In Computer Science, you do a LOT of
programming, and I HATE programming. Being a computer programmer
has to be about as much fun as being an accountant. So what it
comes down to is this. I would have to transfer into a program,
and the only two that have to do with computers I don't like
anything about. So I would spent roughly FOUR years in school
doing something I HATE, then when that's over I have a CHANCE, a
very small chance, to get transferred into the computer security
program. For that program, they only take about 15-20 students
into it each year. So if I didn't get picked, I'd have to wait
for the following year to try again.
So after careful consideration, I feel that the
way things are up there, I do not want to waste 4 years in
something I have absolutely no interest in. Not to mention how
much money it would cost to go to school there AND live up
there. DMACC's tuition is chump change compared to the costs for
ISU. I also heard that if you were to get a job with the FBI,
you basically have to go and live and work where they tell you,
and I don't like that idea at all.
So what are my plans now? Well, I originally had
plans to finish DMACC at the end of spring semester in 2005. But
after looking at things, I would still be 2 classes short from
having my completed Microsoft certification. And since now I
don't have any rush to leave DMACC and hurry off to ISU, I think
I stay at DMACC just a few more semesters. I need to pick up
those 2 classes to get my certification, and pick up a couple
other classes as well. I could just leave school and try
teaching myself what I need to know to pass the certification
test, but with me completely out of school, I would be working,
and I don't see myself having much time to study, and it's
better if I learn what I need to know in a class anyways. You
can only learn so much from a book, but so much more with hands
on experience, and a good instructor.
When DMACC is over and done with, I plan on
moving to Colorado. I might stick around here for awhile to get
some cash rounded up and maybe even gain some valuable
experience with an entry-level job so I can use that experience
to get the good job in Colorado. With what I'm going into,
experience and certifications are the key. You can't get a job
without experience, and you can't get experience without a job.
But I'd rather be living here with family if I can't find a job
than to get out to Colorado, and can't find a job and have no
place to live! |
